Overview

Various events colored the more than 100 years of the Cathedral Church's existence. In 1924, for the first time a Bishop was ordained in the Cathedral Church, namely Mgr A. Van Velsen SJ and the following year the first session of the Indonesian Church Council of Bishops was held in the Cathedral Rectory.

Cardinal Agaginian, an Armenian, visited Jakarta in 1959 and was warmly received by the Church and the leadership of the Republic of Indonesia. His discussions with the bishops and superiors of the order who worked throughout Indonesia were important for the future. The results were announced in 1961: the Church in Indonesia was no longer a mission area, but an independent Church.

The Apostolic Vicar of Jakarta, Mgr. Adrianus Djajasepoetra, who was ordained in the Jakarta Cathedral by the Vatican Ambassador on April 23, 1953, was appointed Archbishop ten years later. At that time, 1962, the Archdiocese of Jakarta included 14 Parishes with a congregation of 32,599 people. The Ecclesiastical Province of Jakarta also includes other dioceses, namely the Diocese of Bogor and the Diocese of Bandung.

In 1963/1965 the Indonesian Bishops participated in the Second Vatican Council, which brought many changes in the pastoral and liturgy of the Church. When the Bishops were still in Rome, the G30S PKI broke out in Jakarta, so the Cathedral needed to be guarded by the Catholic Youth and the military.
