Longwood Gardens is a public garden and horticultural attraction located in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, USA. It covers over 1,077 acres (437 hectares) of land and features a wide variety of gardens, meadows, woodlands, and waterways. The gardens were originally created by Pierre S. du Pont, a wealthy industrialist, in the early 20th century. Du Pont started to develop the gardens in 1906, and over the next several decades, he transformed the land into a spectacular horticultural display. Today, Longwood Gardens is home to over 11,000 different types of plants and features many notable attractions, including: The Italian Water Garden: A series of terraces, fountains, and pools inspired by the gardens of Italy. The Conservatory: A large greenhouse that houses more than 4,600 types of plants, including orchids, palms, and other tropical species. The Outdoor Gardens: A collection of themed gardens, including the Peirce's Woods, the Idea Garden, and the Flower Garden Walk. The Open Air Theatre: A large amphitheater that hosts concerts and performances during the summer months. Longwood Gardens is considered one of the premier horticultural attractions in the world and is visited by over one million people each year.
