SANBI is currently managing what is scheduled to become South Africa’s 11th national botanical garden, currently known as the Thohoyandou Botanical Garden, in Thohoyandou in the far north-eastern corner of the Limpopo Province.
The Thohoyandou Botanical Garden features several walking trails that provide visitors with the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of the area, including several scenic viewpoints. The garden is home to over 500 plant species, including many that are endemic to the region.
The botanical garden also has several facilities for visitors, including a tea garden, a restaurant, a nursery, and a gift shop. The garden hosts several events throughout the year, including plant sales, concerts, and educational programs.
In addition to its natural attractions, the Thohoyandou Botanical Garden also has a traditional Venda village within its boundaries, which provides visitors with an opportunity to experience the culture and traditions of the Venda people. The garden also has a medicinal plant section that showcases the traditional medicinal plants used by the Venda people.
